Born in Taiwan to a prominent family, Tsai studied in the United States from the age of 13 and earned his bachelor's degree in East Asian economics at Yale University.
He later obtained an MBA from Harvard University before returning to Yale Law School to earn his PhD.
After passing the New York bar exam, Tsai worked at international law firm Sullivan & Cromwell between 1990 and 1993 before switching to investment manager Rosecliff as its vice president and in-house counsel.
In 1994, Tsai moved to Hong Kong and was appointed vice president and senior investment manager at Investor Asia Limited, a subsidiary of Swedish investment powerhouse Investor AB.......
