On March 16, 2025, Scottish post-rock giant Mogwai will visit Hong Kong again after a decade and hold a large-scale concert at the West Kowloon Freespace Big Box!
In the 1990s, the British Britpop wave swept the world. Some people were happy and some were angry during the heyday of British rock. Four band members in Glasgow, Scotland were quite tired of the various popular rock styles that were played day and night at the time. Their reactionary method was to learn from American post-hardcore bands, blow up all the established melodies, chords and rhythm structures, and then rebuild their own rock aesthetics on the scorched earth, an aesthetic that was later summarized as post-rock.
The band's name comes from the classic cute fantasy horror film "Gemlins", in which Xianjiao used the Cantonese dialect to refer to the big-eared little monsters. Mogwai's debut album "Young Team" in 1997 started with the 3 minute 44 second guitar explosion in the opening song "Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home", which opened up a whole new musical landscape for music fans at the time. After releasing three classic albums, Come On Die Young, Happy Songs For Happy People and Mr Beast, around the turn of the millennium, Mogwai became increasingly adept at composing epic music that was both violent and delicate. Various filmmakers invited the band to produce film soundtracks, and the first of these was the experimental documentary Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, which featured French soccer king Zidane as the protagonist.
Mogwai completed another variation in 2014's "Rave Tapes", incorporating electric drums, synthesizers, and modular instruments into the arrangement. It was still fierce, forming an electric monster style that broke away from the established framework and even had some dance music elements. Two years later, one of the songs "U-235" for the soundtrack of the documentary "Atomic, Living in Dread and Promise" was 100% electronic music. The new evolution has attracted a new group of young music fans to the band. Two consecutive albums have entered the Top 10 of the UK Record Chart. In 2021, "As The Love Comes" became the champion album, and the live performances have become more abundant.
Mogwai released a new single "God Gets You Back" this year and announced a world tour in 2025. We are very happy to tell you that there will be a Hong Kong stop in March! This is their first performance in Hong Kong in ten years since their finale on the main stage of Clockenflap in 2014. Veteran music fans who have experienced it will certainly know that Mogwai’s live performance is a top-notch music experience worth watching countless times. For new friends, this is also the first time that is worth your anticipation.
